Hahnemühle Sumi-E Paper is designed specifically for the Japanese Sumi-E Painting. This extremely absorbent paper is ideal for brush painting and traditional calligraphy techniques. Sumi-E painting evolved in the 5th century from traditional Chinese calligraphy. Typically the subject of paintings are taken from nature and then in the 12th century Zen monks brought the technique to Japan. Where even today Sumi-E painting has a definitive and lasting influence on people's lifestyles. The word Sumi  means “Black Ink” and E means both “path” & “painting”. 

The style of Sumi-E painting is both simple and highly aesthetic, with works being made from powerful rapidly executed lines. Sumi-E isn't seen as just merely an art form but instead as a form of Spiritual Relaxation Therapy. The paper is 80gsm in weight with a natural white colour finish.

Sumi-E paper has been used for generations to produce impactful and energetic pieces of work. The paper itself is designed explicitly with this medium in mind and would not work very well with other techniques.
