Toned Art Papers
Toned Papers have seen a recent rise in popularity and have become a desirable work surface for many different artist. The unique colour of the paper is in stark contrast to the standard white paper most artists are used to and as such they are now being produced by many of the major art companies. This blog looks at the Top Five Toned Papers we currently stock and aims to show you why they are such a great surface to work onto. These papers have been chosen for their artistic value, their performance, the materials used in their construction and their price value. We have written a little bit about each of them here.
Strathmore Toned
Strathmore Paper is a toned, 100% recycled and wire bound paper, designed primarily with sketching in mind. The paper can be used with Graphite, Chalk, Charcoal, Pens, Pencils, Markers and Coloured Pencils. It has a medium textured surface and is toned specifically with light and dark media in mind. The pad is perfect for life drawing, sketching and fine art pieces, additionally it has Kraft and Bark fibres in its construction giving it a unique appearance.
Hahnemühle Toned Paper
Hahnemühle produces a large variety of papers designed for multiple mediums. The first one we are covering here is their standard toned paper, known as Cappuccino and Grey. The paper is made with fine-fibres and is environmentally friendly, 100% vegan and is PEFC Certified. It is primarily intended to be used with Indian Inks, Fountain Pens and Markers, as it has a smooth surface that is non-absorbing.

On the flip side there is also the Toned watercolour paper from Hahnemühle. Similarly this paper is also 100% vegan and is environmentally friendly. The paper is heavier in weight than that of the sketching paper, coming in at 200gsm, it is designed for use with Watercolours and other wet media. It has a fine grain surface giving it a slight amount of texture, and due to its surface sizing colours can be easily lifted from its surface without any damage. Available in Grey and Tan.
Seawhite Eco Toned Sketchbook
These Seawhite toned pads are handmade within the UK using high quality recycled materials and organic waste, such as corn cobs. They are produced using hydroelectric power also, making them environmentally friendly and also FSC approved. The paper is smooth, acid-free and 140gsm, making it perfect for use with Sketching and Drawing materials. A great all rounder pad that is sustainably made and excellent for any artist at any level,
Clairefontaine Paint-ON Mixed Media Toned Paper
Compared to the other pads on this list, this toned pad is designed with mixed media in mind and as such can be used with a wider variety of materials. The paper is 250gsm making it far heavier than any other on this list, it is also acid free and relatively smooth. As the pads name is “Paint On” it can be painted onto with Acrylics, Gouache and Watercolour paints. As well as being able to handle a large assortment of dry media too, such as graphite, charcoal and pastels.
